PhD studentships of 3 years duration are available within the framework of the International Research Training Group "Deep Earth Volatile Cycles" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). This collaborative research effort between the Bayerisches Geoinstitut at the University of Bayreuth, Germany and the Department of Earth Sciences at Tohoku University, Japan, will study the cycling of volatile elements through the deep interior of the Earth. Using mainly experimental and computational methods the group will study how volatile elements are transported, stored and expelled from the interior.
Doctoral researchers will receive extensive training in modern experimental and/or modelling techniques employed in solid Earth geosciences, while pursuing independent research into geochemical and geophysical aspects of the internal volatile cycle. Researchers will have significant freedom to choose and shape their projects. As part of their studies they will spend between 6 to 12 months at Tohoku University (www.tohoku.ac.jp/en/). Both universities are equipped with excellent experimental (high pressure and temperature), analytical and computational facilities.
